The France we enjoy today still bears the mark of Louis XIV. You can still feel the presence of the Sun King in the arts, science, architecture, fashion and glamour. However, in his desire for absolute rule and personal splendor, Louis XIV slighted the basic needs of the people he ruled: many died of cold and hunger. On his deathbed, Louis XIV expressed to his successor: “Try to remain at peace with your neighbors. I have loved war too much. Do no copy me in that or in my overspending. Lighten your people’s burden as soon as possible, and do what I have the misfortune not to do myself.”[i] Too late for an advice. The monarchy that took seven centuries to build, was destroyed in only seven decades.
