Unit Abstract
In this
unit you will study the religious reformation that took place in
Europe in the early 16th century. You will learn how certain men and women
of this age protested against the corrupt practices of the Roman Catholic
Church. These people revolutionized the religious world with their thoughts and
actions, causing a schism in the Catholic Church and founding the Protestant
religion. You will meet Martin Luther, John Calvin, Henry VIII, Elizabeth
I, and the French Huguenots, among others.
You will also
know the other side of the story, that is, the specific actions the Roman
Catholic Church and its leaders and supporters undertook to stop the spread
of Protestantism in Europe. You will meet Popes Leo X and Paul IV, Emperor
Charles V, Saint Ignatius of Loyola and his Society of Jesus (Jesuits)
and
Saint Dominic and the Sacred Inquisition.
We invite you to read the Project Abstract to
understand the purpose of this project.
