Bachelors Degree in Applied Linguistics

The objective of this program is to train teachers of English as a second or foreign language. The course of study will focus on linguistics, the instruction of foreign languages, and research. Some courses will be taught Spanish and others in English. The graduates will be leaders in the EFL /ESL teaching field, capable of solving problems and generating alternative strategies in the area of English language teaching. Graduates will be able to successfully integrate technological advances into the field, while also being conscious of the social environment surrounding them as educators.

  • English language teaching ESL, EFL, bilingual schools; all levels and ages
  • Teacher Training
  • Educational Planning and Administration
  • Design of Teaching Materials
  • Cultural Promotion
  • Design and Evaluation of English Teaching Programs
  • Research in Language Teaching
  • Academic Consulting
  • Consulting for Publishing Houses
  • Translation and Interpretation


International Certification

Graduates will also obtain the TESST Certificate (Teachers of English to Spanish Speakers Test), which evaluates the knowledge, competence and abilities considered essential in teachers of students whose native language is Spanish. This Certificate is endorsed by College Board Latin America and is recognized internationally.

Plan of Study

  • 54 Courses, the majority taught in English
  • English, Chinese, French or German languages (elective)
  • Teaching practicum
  • Social Service Internship
  • One course of preparation for International Certification or a specialized workshop in translation and interpretation.


Starting dates

During the 2010-2011 academic year, students may begin the program on one of the following dates:

  • September 6, 2010
  • January 10, 2011
  • May 9, 2011
  • *5 students minimum


Class Schedule

Monday to Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Duration

The program consists of nine consecutive 14-week terms. There is no required exam for graduation; however, students must successfully complete a final research project and either a preparation course for International Certification or a specialized workshop in translation and interpretation.

Class size

A maximum of 25 students per trimester will be accepted.

Tuition

Three options for payment:

  • 4 monthly payments of $4,250.00
  • 2 payments: $8,500.00 upon registration and a second of $7,850.00
  • One single payment of $15,300.00 upon registration
  • Individual courses: $2,450.00


Other fees

An anthology of course materials: $700.00 per term, The library includes all the course books and is available to all students. Students may also purchase the books.

Requirements for Admission

A. Mastery of English (if applicable)

The student must provide one of the following:

  • A minimum score of 600 on the TOEIC exam *
  • A minimum score of 500 on the TOEFL PBT
  • A minimum score of 180 on the TOEFL CBT exam
  • A minimum score of 65 on the TOEFL IBT exam *

* Can be taken at the ATS on specified dates

Those students who do not fulfill the minimum English requirement may choose to register conditionally, with the understanding that they will obtain one of the required scores by the end of the third term.

To assist these students we offer:

  • A proficiency course of 60 class hours and 60 hours of independent study in the SALC (Self- Access Learning Center) during the month immediately prior to the beginning of the term (fee: $3,850.00).
  • Regular EFL (Carrera Técnica) courses offered by the ATS during the terms.

B. Interview

The candidate must be interviewed by the Director of the Institute or the Coordinator of the Degree Program.

C. Documentation

The following documents are required:

  • 6 Recent 1?x1? ID pictures (black and white)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Junior High School/Secundaria Certificate
  • High School/Preparatoria/Bachillerato Certificate
  • Document certifying the candidate´s mastery of English (if applicable)
  • CURP (personal identification number for Mexico).

    TESST


The Teachers of English to Spanish Speakers Test (TESST) is a unique assessment tool to evaluate the knowledge, competencies and skills considered essential for an effective teacher of the English language to native Spanish speakers. It includes both linguistic abilities and pedagogical skills and takes into account the linguistic transfer and interference between Spanish and English. Designed and validated by ESL/EFL specialists from College Board Latin America, it offers reliable standardized criteria for the professional qualifications of teachers of English to Spanish speakers.

    TOEIC Authorized Test Center




The Language Institute of the American School of Tampico is pleased to inform all the community that we are now an authorized center for giving the TOEIC exam (Test of English for International Communication).



The TOEIC is the exam that is used most all over the world by businesses, universities and governmental agencies in order to obtain an objective measurement of the English level of the persons evaluated.

The TOEIC is a practical exam to asses communication ability in English of people whose native language is not English. The exam results show how well a person is able to communicate in this language. Educational Testing Service (ETS) developed the TOEIC in 1979 and with the years the TOEIC has been adopted all over the world, rapidly becoming the glogal standard in evaluating the use of the English Language.

The TOEIC measures people's ability in two parts, listening and reading comprehension. The results are measured individually so that those who have taken the exam may know in detail their performance in the different sections. The maximum score per section is 495 points. The TOEIC is the exam most used all over the worl by companies, universities and government agencies in order to obtain an objective reading on the level of English of the persons evaluated.

In 2005, ETS introduced the next generation TOEFL Test. It is a Internet-based test (iBT) that is delivered through secure testing centers around the world.

The new TOEFL iBT test was phased in as of September 2005 in the United States. It was introduced in Canada, France, Germany and Italy in October 2005, and it is now being introduced in the rest of the world.
